CellarView Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 24, 2026 Last updated: October 24, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Wine Observer, LLC ("CellarView," "we," "us," or "our") handles information in connection with:

  • the CellarView app for iPhone and iPad (the "App"), and
  • the CellarView website at wine.observer and its staging address wineobserver.dev (the "Website").

Together, the App and the Website are the "Services." If you have questions, contact us at [email protected].

The Short Version

  • The App is designed so that we do not collect your data. Your cellar, bottles, racks, notes, photos, and settings stay on your device, or in your own iCloud account if you turn on sync.
  • The App has no ads, no tracking, and no third-party analytics. It is built for the App Store privacy label "Data Not Collected."
  • When the App looks up a barcode or refreshes wine details, it contacts only the information sources you use. Those sources handle that request under their own privacy policies.
  • If you join the waitlist on the Website, we store your email address, the bottle range you chose (if any), the sign-up date, and your country as reported by our hosting provider. We use it only to email you about CellarView's launch and early access.
  • The Website uses no advertising or tracking cookies.
  • We do not sell or share your personal information, and we never use it for targeted advertising.

Part 1: The CellarView App

Information stored on your device

The App lets you build a record of your wine collection. Depending on how you use it, this may include:

  • wine details such as producer, wine name, vintage, varietal, type, region, and bottle count;
  • label photos you take;
  • rack layouts and bottle locations (rack, row, slot, and depth);
  • drinking windows, maturity status, and bottles you mark as enjoyed;
  • tasting notes you write or import;
  • links you add, such as a producer tech sheet;
  • your settings, including refresh schedule, Wi-Fi and charging rules, per-wine rules, and notification preferences.

This information is stored locally on your device. We do not have access to it, and it is not transmitted to us.

Camera and photos

The App asks for camera access so you can scan barcodes and photograph labels. You can also turn on the torch in dim cellars. [Confirm before publishing: label reading, including detection of producer, vintage, and grape, is performed on your device.] Images and recognized text are not sent to us. You can change camera access at any time in iOS Settings.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, the App alerts you when a wine nears or reaches its drinking window, or sends a periodic digest. [Confirm before publishing: notifications are scheduled locally on your device.] Actions such as View, Snooze, and Mark as Enjoyed are processed on your device. You can turn notifications off at any time in iOS Settings.

iCloud sync (optional)

iCloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on, your cellar data is stored in and synced through your own iCloud account, operated by Apple. We cannot access the contents of your iCloud data. Apple's handling of iCloud data is described in the Apple Privacy Policy. You can turn sync off at any time in the App or in iOS Settings.

Barcode lookups and wine information sources

When you scan a barcode or the App refreshes wine details, the App sends the minimum information needed for that lookup, such as the barcode number or wine name, directly from your device to the information source being used. As with any internet request, that source may also receive technical information such as your IP address and device type.

  • Requests go to the information sources you use. They do not pass through our servers.
  • Each source handles requests under its own privacy policy and terms.
  • The App asks for the refresh schedule you choose (Immediately, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly), subject to iOS background limits. You can limit checks to Wi-Fi or charging, or set a wine to Never update.
  • New information from a source is always shown as a suggestion. The App never overwrites what you entered without your confirmation.

Critic sources you connect

You may connect publications you already subscribe to. When you do, the App communicates with that publication on your behalf, using the access you have authorized, to display what your subscription allows and to link to full reviews. [Confirm before publishing: any sign-in credentials or access tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain on your device and are never sent to us.] You can disconnect a source at any time. Your relationship with each publication is governed by its own terms and privacy policy.

Imports and exports

  • CellarTracker: you can import your own CellarTracker data, such as an export file you provide. The import is processed on your device and is not sent to us.
  • CSV: you can export your entire cellar to CSV at any time, or import a CSV to get started. Exported files are saved where you choose, and you control who you share them with.

What we do not do in the App

  • We do not collect your cellar data, photos, notes, or settings.
  • We do not use advertising, advertising identifiers, or tracking.
  • We do not include third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
  • We do not require you to create a CellarView account.
  • We do not collect your precise location.

Information Apple provides to developers

Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymized information about App downloads, sales, and, only if you have chosen to share it with developers through iOS settings, crash reports and usage data. This information does not identify you to us. See the Apple Privacy Policy for details.

Part 2: The CellarView Website

Waitlist

If you join the waitlist, we collect:

  • your email address;
  • the bottle range you chose, if any (for example, "under 50" or "50 to 250");
  • the date and time you signed up;
  • your country, as reported by our hosting provider (based on your IP address; we do not store the IP address itself with your sign-up).

We use this information only to email you about CellarView's launch and early access, and to understand roughly how large our future users' collections are. We do not add you to unrelated mailing lists.

When we choose an email delivery provider, we intend to send a confirmation email asking you to confirm your sign-up before you receive further messages. Every email will include a way to unsubscribe. We will update this policy to name that provider.

Spam protection

To keep automated sign-ups off the waitlist, the form may use Cloudflare Turnstile, a privacy-focused verification tool that does not use advertising cookies. When it is used, your IP address and the verification result are processed by Cloudflare to check that the request is from a person. The form also includes a hidden field that helps filter out automated submissions.

Analytics

The Website may use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies and does not track you across sites. It provides aggregated information such as page views and general performance. If it is not enabled, no analytics script loads.

Cookies

The Website does not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically processes technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages requested, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. This information is handled by Cloudflare under the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.

How We Share Information

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information for advertising. We share limited information only with service providers that help us run the Services, and only for that purpose:

Provider Purpose Information involved
Cloudflare, Inc. Website hosting, waitlist storage, spam protection, optional cookie-free analytics Waitlist details, IP address, technical request data
Apple Inc. App distribution and optional iCloud sync Handled by Apple under its own policy; we cannot access your iCloud data
[Email provider, to be named] Sending waitlist and launch emails Email address

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety, or property of CellarView, our users, or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.

Data Retention

  • App data stays on your device or in your iCloud account until you delete it. Deleting the App removes its local data from that device. iCloud data can be managed in your iCloud settings.
  • Waitlist information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or until it is no longer needed for launch and early-access communication, after which we delete it.

Your Choices and Rights

You can:

  • unsubscribe from waitlist emails at any time using the link in any email, or by emailing [email protected];
  • ask us to access, correct, or delete the waitlist information we hold about you;
  • turn off camera access, notifications, and iCloud sync at any time in iOS Settings;
  • export or delete your cellar data in the App at any time.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, other U.S. state privacy laws, or the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These can include the right to know, access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, to object to or restrict processing, and to withdraw consent. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

To make a request, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your request, for example by confirming it from the email address on the waitlist. We will respond within the time required by applicable law. If you are in the EU or UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

For EU and UK users, our legal basis for processing waitlist information is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. Server and security processing relies on our legitimate interest in operating and protecting the Website.

International Transfers

We are based in the United States, and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the standard contractual clauses used by our providers, for transfers of personal information.

Security

We use reasonable measures to protect the limited information we hold, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls on our hosting accounts. Because the App keeps your cellar data on your device or in your iCloud account, your data also benefits from Apple's device and iCloud security protections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Age Requirement

CellarView is intended only for adults of legal drinking age in their country or region (21 or older in the United States). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age. If you believe someone underage has joined the waitlist, contact us and we will delete their information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the Services change, for example when the App launches or when we choose an email provider. We will post the updated policy with a new "Last updated" date. If we make material changes, we will notify waitlist members by email or provide notice in the App.
